I always get questions regarding my callsign.
It is easily recognizable on phone, but especially on CW. I am
known almost internationally as "no hi." Here is a brief
history of the N0HI callsign. Harold I. Johnson of Remsen, Iowa held this callsign as far back as callsign history is recorded. I did not find much information on him, although when I first got the callsign, I always heard, "Good to work you again, Harry." He must have been an avid DX'er, since even the ultra-rare "regulars" know me as Harry now. I was K1KAA, another callsign with an interesting CW prefix, but was ready to chase my work in the ski industry from Massachusetts to Colorado. In anticipation, I started looking over the list of 0-land calls. There were a few ugly 2x1's and some even uglier 1x3's. I knew I would be operating quite often and saying it a lot, so I wanted it to be right. Then, while scanning the page at vanityhq.com, N0HI caught my eye. I knew it was right, and played the ".... .." prefix over and over in my head. The first day it was available, I applied and was the first. I did spend some time in Colorado, but quickly chased work back to New England again. I thought about changing to a 1-land callsign, but by then N0HI had become so well known it just didn't make sense. I didn't know Harold Johnson, but I am thankful he laid such a respectable history for this callsign and I hope to uphold it for as long as I am able. When you hear the ".... .." in the contests, be it from me or a guest op, give us a call! |
